Thursday Sep 28, 2023
Today we’re talking about Culture.
Culture is the unseen competitive advantage that sets winning teams and organisations apart. But one of the most overlooked aspects of organisational culture is in our language and in the stories we tell.
Ginger Hardage is former senior vice president of culture and communication for southwest airlines and she believes that the stories we tell are crucial in building the culture we want.
Ginger retired after an illustrious 25 years, where she served as a member of the CEO’s executive leadership team. At Southwest, Ginger led a team of 150 people responsible for building and sustaining the organisation’s legendary culture and communications enterprise.
During her tenure, she played a crucial role in developing and maintaining Southwest's culture, leading to the company's numerous recognitions on FORTUNE’s “Most Admired Companies in the World” list appearing for 23 consecutive years and included on Glassdoor's Best Places to Work List in 2022 for the 13th consecutive year.
Throughout her career, Ginger received numerous accolades, including induction into the Public Relations Hall of Fame and being named as one of Texas’ Most Powerful and Influential Women. She was also recognised by PRWeek multiple times in its Top 50 Power list and 50 Most Powerful Women in Public Relations.

Mark Butler on a proactive approach to mental health and supporting your team
Thursday Sep 21, 2023
Thursday Sep 21, 2023
We’re having a conversation about Mental Health.
There was once the belief that there is our personal life and our work life and never the two shall meet. What we know is that the line between personal and work is more intertwined than ever before. And as a leader the solution is never to tell people to leave their issues at home or to harden up.
But as leaders, it can feel hard to know what to do when people on our team need some extra support.
Accredited clinical psychotherapist Mark Butler believes that prevention is better than reaction. Mark has 25 years corporate experience and 15 years’ clinical experience in the field with a focus on workplace burnout, stress, anxiety and related unhealthy coping behaviours.
From his work as a Clinical Director, developing programs for the most deeply affected populations, Mark completely understands burnout and executive exhaustion. He sees the need to shift from being the ‘ambulance at the bottom of the cliff’ to being the ‘fence at the top of the cliff’ – working with organisations to be proactive in preventing issues from becoming problems.
Mark’s knowledge and experience has underpinned his drive and passion for pursuing effective recovery and resilience programs to get employees back on track and performing at their optimum level. His practice is built around belonging and our primal, human need to feel safe.

Sameer Srivastava on culture, adaptability and inclusion
Thursday Sep 14, 2023
Thursday Sep 14, 2023
We’re having a conversation about Inclusion.
When it comes to inclusion at work we can all agree that diversity, equity and inclusion matters. This is something few people would debate. But while there have been countless studies that show the importance of creating inclusive workplaces. The current evidence also shows us that much of the effort and investment we make in diversity programs on average doesn’t have as much impact as we would like to see and at times can even have a negative impact.
Sameer B. Srivastava is a Professor of Business Administration and Public Policy at UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business and is also affiliated with UC Berkeley Sociology. His research uses computational methods to: (1) unpack the complex interrelationships between group culture, individual cognition, and interpersonal networks; and (2) examine how they jointly relate to individual attainment and organizational performance. His work has been published in such journals as American Journal of Sociology, American Sociological Review, Administrative Science Quarterly, Management Science, and Organization Science. It has been covered in such media outlets as The New York Times, Fortune, The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, and Forbes. He currently serves as Organizations Department Editor at Management Science and was previously a Senior Editor at Organization Science. Sameer co-directs the Berkeley Culture Center and the Berkeley-Stanford Computational Culture Lab. In a prior career, Sameer was a partner at a global management consultancy (Monitor Group; now Monitor Deloitte) and he holds AB, AM, MBA, and PhD degrees from Harvard University.

Kelly Irving on books, reflection and the practice of writing
Thursday Aug 17, 2023
Thursday Aug 17, 2023
Today we're talking all about writing
One of the best practices a leader can develop is the practice of writing. Not just personal and self-reflective writing, like a journal, but long-form writing that captures your thinking, ideas, expertise, experiences and stories.
Expert book coach Kelly Irving believes that writing a book is much more than the outcome of holding a book in your hands, but a process of capturing your ideas and stories and becoming someone in the process.
Kelly is creating a new breed of authors. Her approach to book coaching was born out of a starry-eyed innocence. She wasn't programmed by years working in a stuffy publishing agency, nobody handed her the 'rule book', and she missed the memo that business books had to be boring.
Her 'Write Book Method' is for the originals, creatives and renaissance spirits who are brave enough to share new solutions, offer new insights, and reframe ideas around the most pressing issues of our lives. It's a framework for business strategy and reader transformation to beautifully co-exist.
In her words, your community is waiting to be ignited by your body of work. You owe it to them to share it with authenticity, courage, and integrity.

Jimmy Burroughes on what it really means to build a culture of high performance.
Thursday Jul 20, 2023
Thursday Jul 20, 2023
We’re having a conversation about a culture of high performance.
When you think of the phrase ‘high-performance culture’ you might think of a leader that beats their team into submission, that is all results-focused and pushes people to burnout. But my guest today, Jimmy Burroughes is on a mission to change that perception and the way we lead teams. He believes that it’s possible to build high-performance cultures that deliver profits, engage staff, and actually prevent burnout.
With years of experience as an Officer in the British Military and a track record of success as a people leader in top global organisations, Jimmy knows what it takes to build a high-performance culture that delivers results. But it’s not what you might think. He realised that traditional approaches to leadership and high-performance team programs were leaving leaders and teams burned out, disengaged, and underperforming. That's why Jimmy and his team of experts from diverse industries have developed a proven approach to building high-performance cultures that helps people thrive and be at their best. Based on years of research and hands-on experience, this helps leaders who want to achieve their full potential without giving up their weekends or sacrificing the well-being of their teams.

Jenny Stilwell on overcoming the roadblocks that stand in the way of growth
Thursday Jul 13, 2023
Thursday Jul 13, 2023
Today on the podcast we’re talking all about growth.
Whether you’re in a business or running a business, leaders are passionate about growth. That could be personal or it could be commercial. But here’s the thing, if you want sustained growth you need to start with the right foundations. There are some things you need to know to make sure you take control of that growth.
My guest is Jenny Stilwell, author of the newly released book ‘The 7% Club’.
Research tells us that only 7% of businesses in Australia break through the $2M turnover barrier and Jenny is all about helping lift that number. Jenny works regularly with CEO’s and teams to help them overcome the roadblocks that stand in the way of growth. Her philosophy is that a business should be an enabler of a better life, rather than something that tethers you to it.
Whether you are a business owner or an individual leader, the principles Jenny talks about are powerful foundations for business or leadership growth and impact.

Cam Fink on how to be less sh*t on camera
Saturday Jul 08, 2023
Saturday Jul 08, 2023
We’re talking about how to be less shit on camera.
If you’re like most people, you probably don’t have any big issues holding a conversation with another person. But if that other person is holding a camera up to your face, then maybe it’s not so easy.
With the rise in AI platforms transforming the way we deliver written messaging, video is how we build trust, increase visibility and connect in a truly human way.
But to do that, we have to learn how to get better at how we show up on camera. And here to talk about that is Cam Fink.
If a bunch of people are happy together, Cam would like to be there. If they’re talking about interesting things and getting excited, even better. If they need help being happy and excited, Cam would DEFINITELY like to be there.
He also likes helping people bring out their best selves on camera.
Drawing on decades behind the camera - and a pandemic in front of it - Cam knows exactly how to bring out your best when showing up on video.

Maria Thattil on breaking free from assumptions and living a truly unbounded life
Thursday Jul 06, 2023
Thursday Jul 06, 2023
We’re having a conversation about assumptions.
As humans, we often make assumptions about people from a distance, and these assumptions can be far from reality. However, when you find yourself in a position of leadership or in the public spotlight, where many assumptions are made about you, how do you ensure that you don't start believing everything that's said? How do you break free from self-limiting beliefs and live a truly unbounded life?
My guest is Maria Thattil, author of 'Unbounded' whose story can show us what it means to shake off assumptions, live true to who you are and make the world a better place through your influence and platform.
Maria is a multi-talented personality in Australia. She is Miss Universe Australia 2020, a published author, TV presenter, actor, speaker, activist, and creator. Maria's writing has been featured in various outlets such as 9Honey, Stellar Magazine, Buzzfeed, Body+Soul, Mamamia, and Women's Agenda. She has also worked with top brands such as Olay, Alfa Romeo, Clinique, Piper Heidsieck, and L'Oréal Paris.
Her book, Unbounded, guides readers on self-mastery by exploring the complexities of race, sexuality, gender, and identity. She has made waves internationally after coming out as bisexual on-air during her appearance on I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! in 2022.
Maria is a campaigner for diversity, inclusion, LGBTQIA+ rights, mental health, and gender equality. She is a guest Host on Channel 10's The Project and a current panelist on Channel 9's Today Extra and Talking Honey. In 2023, she is set to release her own show and make her acting debut.
